How we got started
Katie Dowd was at the grocery store, shopping for baby food for her infant son. She began to read the labels on the jars of food, but was unable to identify some of the ingredients. “Chemistry was not one of my strongest subjects in school,” she said.
Dowd did some research and discovered the baby food contained several additives and preservatives, as well as salt or sugar/corn syrup. She was concerned about what effect these substances could have on her son. She was also concerned that there was no information about where, or how, the produce used in the baby food was grown. Did the fruits and vegetables contain pesticides?
She was equally concerned about the quality. Her son had become a picky eater. She sampled the jars of food herself and soon discovered why…the food tasted terrible, and looked even worse. “Do you really need to add artificial color to carrots to make them orange?” she wondered.
Dowd began making her own baby food to supplement her son’s diet, experimenting with the combination of various fruits and vegetables. Her son became a food critic at a very early age, letting her know which blends worked and which ones didn’t.
Whenever possible, she would purchase produce that was “USDA certified organic” to ensure there were no pesticides present, although organically grown food was not popular (nor easy to find) at the time.
Two years later, when her second son was ready to start eating baby food, she was making most of his meals herself, continuing her trial-and-error method of developing new fruit and vegetable blends. Her twin sons were born a few years later, and they also enjoyed the fruits – and vegetables – of her labor.
With all four boys now on “solid food,” Dowd figured her days of peeling and pureeing were over. That is, until friends with infants began asking her for her baby food recipes. She discovered many parents, like her, were concerned about the quality of the food they were feeding their infants.
With encouragement from her sister and other friends and family members, she decided to start a company that offered an alternative to over-processed, mass-produced baby food…Nature’s Simple Blends.

Hi Katie,
I just wanted to let you know that Elliott is LOVING the food! Last
night he had the spinach, peas, and sweet potatoes and you would have thought
I was giving him chocolate! He has had maybe 4 of them so far and has
loved every one. We haven't tried the peas and spinach yet but I will let you
know what he thinks. Thanks again, we will be placing another order next week.
